If you feel that you need a longer process during which you can deal with problems not only related to your PhD, you can take up therapy.
Therapy in English, Spanish, Catalan
About Me:
My name is Ana and I live in Barcelona. I consider myself an empathetic and sensitive person, able to adapt to changes. I love animals, nature and dance, and I have recently become a mother.
Therapy Style and Experience:
In my work I use psycho-therapeutic models with a relational focus (family-systemic therapy and attachment theory), to understand the causes of suffering and to activate the resources of each person to facilitate change.
I would describe myself as an active, direct and emotional therapist.
My Experience with the PhD world:
I received my Bachelor degree in Psychology from the University of Barcelona. I further pursued a Masters in Neurosciences thanks to which I entered the world of academic research. For three years I worked in the Center for Brain and Cognition at the University Pompeu Fabra as research assistant and later as coordinator of the Babylab.
In 2013 I left the lab to start my career as clinical therapist. Since then I have had several PhD students as patients/clients and therefore empathize greatly with those suffering in the process.
Therapy in English
About Me:
My name’s Chris and I’ve lived in Barcelona for many years although I’m originally from the UK. I have an interest in Mindfulness and meditation and believe strongly in continuous personal development, we are always a work in progress. I try to live according to my values with compassion for others and myself, and I believe my work as a therapist reflects these things.
Therapy Style and Experience:
I’m a psychotherapist specialised in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. I graduated with an honours degree in psychology in the UK and worked for many years there in the mental health field, helping people with a wide range of psychological issues. I completed my Masters in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy in Barcelona and as a therapist I offer clients a safe, confidential and welcoming environment in which to explore and navigate through difficult times in their lives. The therapy is an active, collaborative process and encourages clients to learn techniques which they can use during the period of therapy and take with them as tools to help in the future, promoting independence and longer term benefits.
My Experience with the PhD world:
As well as my own experience during my degree and Masters I have worked with a number of clients studying in tertiary education including PhD students. CBT is a practical, evidence-based therapy which helps people identify patterns of thoughts and behaviour that give them difficulties and to build more helpful ones. It is backed up by many studies demonstrating its efficacy with a range of psychological issues and this scientific approach can be well-suited to people working on their doctorates.
Therapy in English, Spanish, Catalan
About Me:
My name is Anna and I come from a multicultural home, with an English father and a Catalan mother. I’m interested in how culture and language shape our identity and self-image: both the cultures we are born into, the legacies from our families of origin, and the contexts we live our lives in (personal, professional and social).
Therapy Style and Experience:
I have eight years of experience working cross-culturally with people who embark on the adventure of moving to a new country and culture, motivated by better work opportunities, love, a desire for something new, or to live life according to one’s own personal values. It is often a journey of self-discovery and of finding our roots as we build new ones to support our life-choices and desired ways of living.
My Experience with the PhD world:
I have worked closely with women in Science in the doctoral world, a complex culture in itself where although science is the common language, challenges can ensue between the demands and expectations the doctoral candidate is subject to and their own values, expectations, hopes and goals. My aim is to serve as a catalyst for the person’s resources, by providing a tailor-made approach to therapy to work towards the desired changes, support in resolving dilemmas or issues in communication in significant work relationships (with colleagues, supervisors or PIs) and to foster a healthy sense of self-worth and self-confidence to maneuver the challenges ahead.
Therapy in Italian and Spanish
About Me:
My name is Ornella, I’m Italian but since 2013 I have been living in Barcelona. I am a cheerful and sociable person and my motto is “sharing is living”. In my free time I like to cook and take advantage of the nice Barcelona weather.
Therapy Style and Experience:
I am a General Health Psychologist and hold a PhD in Psychology, specializing in both individual and couples therapy. My focus is relational-systemic and I consider the therapeutic process a relationship of collaboration between the therapist and the patient whose common objective is to develop a broader and/or alternative view of the problem leading to the therapy.
My Experience with the PhD world:
I myself have also been a PhD student. I started my PhD shortly after my arrival to Barcelona in a phase of my life full of changes. The PhD years were complicated and full of stress and emotional ups and downs. This led me to start a therapeutic process and now as a therapist I hope to help you in your own PhD process.
